HAB at Mountain Lake - Update

Please be advised that Mountain Lake had been identified as containing  HAB
(Harmful Algae Bloom) in November 2019.

NJDEP stated that they would be retesting the lake and advise of the results.

As of 23 December 2019, this is the response that was received from NJDEP
regarding a second testing;

"Unfortunately due to the large amount of HAB events this year, we are still working 

to perform the final sampling on many of these water bodies.  Mountain Lake is 

scheduled to be sampled within the first two weeks of January."

Mountain Lake Algal Bloom Identification

Warren County Board of Health received a report of a suspected Harmful Algal Bloom at Mountain Lake in Belvidere and confirmed through sampling and analysis that an HAB is present.  

Warren County Board of Health will post an advisory at public access points.  Please respect the "RED" Danger signage.

Because the weather is changing, the Warren County Board of Health anticipates the HAB will be short lived and plan on resampling in the beginning of December.  We will share these results as well as any new advisory recommendations received at Liberty Township Municipal Offices.

Pollinator Week 2019

Pollinator Program at the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center Saturday, June 22  at 11:00 a.m.  This special Pequest program will focus on pollinators and their importance in the ecoysystem - as well as the perils they face. Endangered and Nongame Species Program biologist Rob Somes will conduct the program and highlight pollinator conservation on state lands and provide some butterfly gardening information. Attendees will see examples of "bee huts" for non-stinging bees they can make or obtain online. Registration required - call 908-637-4125 x0. NOTE: The facility is closed weekends and only program registrants will be admitted. This program is sponsored by the Mansfield Twp. JCP&L Annual Vegetation Management Aerial Patrol

Jersey Central Power & Light will be conducting our Annual Vegetation Management Aerial Patrol. Vegetation Management Aerial inspections are scheduled during the April through September time frame on an annual basis and cover all transmission facilities system-wide. Patrols consist of a Forestry Specialist that accompanies the pilot to identify effectiveness of prior year’s herbicide application and identification of any conditions warranting further inspection from the ground and or corrective action.

Please be advised that Haverfield will be the helicopter company assisting in the inspections on all JCP&L Transmission Lines, beginning May 20^th and 21^st, weather permitting.

The pilot will be in communication with any local airports, when in their airspace. The helicopter will be flying at a speed of about 35-40 mph above or alongside the lines and may circle around for a closer inspection.

Joint Meeting - Independence and Liberty Townships

There will be a public meeting hosted by the 
Independence Township committee and the Liberty Township committee on 
March 5th at 7:00PM 
at the Independence Fire House, 24 Cemetery Road, Great Meadows 
to discuss moving the school board election date back to April which will once 
again allow the public to vote on the school budget. The school budget makes 
up approximately 60-65% of a property owners annual property tax bill. 
Since 2010 when legislation was passed to move school board elections to 
November, residents have not been allowed to vote on this budget. The 
township committees can vote to restore the election back to April once 
again allowing the public to vote on the school budget. The township 
committees want to hear from the residents of both towns on the issue, 
please plan on attending this very important meeting.

JCPL Helicopter Patrol

Please be advised that on Monday 2/25, weather permitting, Haverfield will be mobilizing and will begin performing routine patrols on all 500kV and 230kV transmission lines. The patrols are expected to take 7-10 days to complete but as always, completion can be impeded due to inclement weather and any patrol work related to outages and/or storm restoration. The following helicopter will be used for the routine patrols:

A routine patrol is a general, overall look at the transmission line, right-of-way, structures, and all associated hardware where the inspection crew is trying to look for any obvious/outstanding maintenance conditions. A Routine Patrol is typically flown around 25-30 knots (30-35mph) but the helicopter may be seen hovering or circling structures or spans of a transmission line to get a better look at any conditions found during the patrol(s).

It should be noted that the contractor has been authorized to patrol the transmission circuits in their entirety (i.e. "breaker-to-breaker"), so patrols on certain lines may therefore extend into the neighboring regions. The flight crew provides information on their daily location to both Transmission Lines Maintenance and the FCC, and the pilot will be in communication with any local airports when in their airspace.
